Waterline break identified, fixed as Emporia water woes continue | City | emporiagazette.com

Nov 07, 2024

A mechanical failure and waterline break have been identified and fixed after Tuesday's contamination of Emporia’s water at the Water Treatment Plant. On Tuesday, City of Emporia officials issued a boil water advisory for Lyon County and surrounding public water systems after it failed to meet water safety standards put in place by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

City officials are working on reducing turbidity levels and repairing the Ozonation system found in the Water Treatment Plant. The changes would eliminate the current water’s discoloration and distinct odor.

Water must pass a KDHE-approved water quality test before the boiling water advisory can be lifted. City officials plan to conduct this test once all systems become fully operational.

Friday is estimated to be the earliest time for the boil advisory to be lifted, but rescinding of the advisory is dependent on complying with KDHE standards.

Residents are reminded to avoid using tap water for drinking, cooking, and oral hygiene. All tap water should be brought to a roiling boil for one minute before use. Bottled water can be found at available grocery stores and gas stations.

The City will release updates on the boil advisory on their official website and social media channels.
