The City of Emporia has announced significant progress and upcoming work on the 24th Avenue and Prairie Street Waterline Improvements Project, a large-scale infrastructure upgrade that will impact traffic and water services in several areas of the city.
The project, which began earlier this year, involves the installation of approximately 12,600 linear feet of new water mains ranging from 6 to 24 inches in diameter, along with 33 new service lines and related equipment. City officials expect the construction to continue into the summer or fall of 2025, weather permitting.
Current work is focused on Prairie Street, where crews are installing a 24-inch water main from Hillcrest Drive to 12th Avenue. This phase of the project has resulted in the closure of Prairie Street to through traffic just south of the Hillcrest Drive and 24th Avenue intersection. However, 24th Avenue between Lincoln Street and Prairie Street, as well as Prairie Street north of Hillcrest Drive/24th Avenue, remain open.
Starting the week of Oct. 16, residents can expect additional disruptions:
18th Avenue at Prairie Street will be closed for up to three weeks for the construction of a 6-inch water main. This work will utilize directional drilling along the west curb of Prairie Street.
During this period, there will be occasional lane reductions in the southbound lane of Prairie Street between 18th Avenue and 15th Avenue.
The City is advising residents to:
Proceed with caution in construction zones
Follow all posted traffic control signage
Seek alternate routes when possible
Be aware that driveway access along the construction route may be temporarily limited
For those looking to stay informed about traffic and utility changes during the project, the City recommends downloading the MyAlerts app for updates.
Residents with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact the City of Emporia Engineering Department at 620-343-4260 or email [email protected] from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday -Friday.
