The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for Olpe residents after a waterline break caused a loss of pressure in the city's water distribution system.

The advisory, which began Oct. 25, will remain in effect until officials confirm the water system is safe from potential bacterial contamination. The pressure loss could result in reduced chlorine levels and increased risk of contamination. The break, located on an 8-inch line near Road 130, was found around 8:30 a.m. Friday. The site is approximately two miles south and a mile east of the Olpe pump station, which is located just south of the former Fanestil Meats plant on Kansas Highway 99 south of Emporia.

Residents should boil water for one minute before drinking or food preparation, or use bottled water as an alternative. KDHE also advises:

Only KDHE can lift the advisory after testing is completed at a certified laboratory. Residents with questions can contact the Olpe water system at 620-475-3780 or KDHE at 785-296-5514.

Local food establishments with concerns about how the advisory affects their operations should contact the Kansas Department of Agriculture's food safety program at [email protected] or 785-564-6767.
